Hail hit several areas of Jakarta on Thursday at around 3:20 p.m. following heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The ice pellets, seen on Jl. MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta, and in Semanggi, South Jakarta, were mostly the size of small marbles.
Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spokesman Hary Tito Djatmiko said hailstorms commonly occurred during the transition period from the dry season to the rainy season and vice versa.
Hary said hailstorms could happen if the temperature of the previous day was higher than usual. The higher temperature could be the result of strong sun radiation and high humidity.
Before the hailstorm, cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds appeared in the afternoon. Hary added that people could also feel strong wind before the rain.
The BMKG said the rainy season would reach its peak in January and February next year. (cal)
